The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will observe a 12-hour “Bangla Bandh” in West Bengal on Wednesday, August 28, to protest against police action against protesters who participated in the ‘Nabanna Abhijan‘ rally on Tuesday. Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari said that if police repression is not stopped immediately, the party will bring West Bengal to a standstill. “The government will not allow any bandh on Wednesday. We urge people not to participate in this. All steps will be taken to ensure that normal life remains unaffected,” said Alapan Bandopadhyay, chief advisor to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Over 200 people were arrested and several injured in several parts of Kolkata city after police action on protesters attempting to move towards the state secretariat to press for Mamata Banerjee’s resignation. On August 9, a rally was organized by a new student organization, ‘Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj’, to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a female trainee doctor inside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata.

The CBI will seek the opinion of medical experts from AIIMS Delhi to find out whether prime accused Sanjay Roy was the only accused who had committed the crime. He is currently in judicial custody. The agency is investigating Sandeep Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, for financial irregularities as well as rape and murder.

Apart from the CBI, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken cognizance of the CBI First Information Report (FIR) and initiated a money laundering investigation against Dr Ghosh.
